| When results come | From the day the campaign starts | In months |
| How you pay | Per click, plus management | Work on the site and its content |
| If you stop | Traffic stops at once | Traffic falls slowly if you do not maintain it |
| Control | You pick keywords, areas, hours, budget | Google decides the position |
| Measurement | Cost per lead, within the first weeks | Rankings, visits and leads, over time |
| Good for | New businesses, offers, seasonal services | A steady flow of customers with no charge per click |
How Google charges for ads
With search ads you pay when someone clicks your ad. Whether it shows, in which position and how much the click costs is decided by an auction on every search. According to Google's help page on Ad Rank (October 2026), the factors include your bid, how strong your ad and the page it leads to are, the competition and the circumstances of the search, such as location, device and time. Google notes that you can win a higher position at a lower price even if your competitors bid more.
In plain words: an ad that matches the search exactly and leads to a good, fast page plays on better terms than a generic ad that leads to your home page.
On budget: you set an average daily amount. According to Google, on a given day a campaign may spend up to twice that, but by the end of the month you will not have spent more than 30.4 times your average daily budget.
See what a budget buys with your own numbers. Google Ads' Keyword Planner gives indicative click prices for your keywords:

What a Google Ads budget buys

Most you pay per month
€304
Clicks per month, roughly

Cost per enquiry

The cost per click and the rate are examples: use your own from your account or from Keyword Planner. On a single day Google may spend up to twice the daily budget, but never more than 30.4 times it over a month.

Without tracking, you throw money away
The most common mistake with ads is not the keywords. It is that nobody measures what happened after the click. Before you spend the first euro:
- Conversion tracking: Google has to know when someone sent a form, tapped your phone number or bought. Otherwise it optimises for clicks, not customers.
- Consent Mode: in Europe, Google's tools need the visitor's consent for cookies. Since March 2024 Google has required advertisers in the European Economic Area to pass that consent through Consent Mode, or measurement and remarketing audiences are lost.
- Landing page: every ad group leads to the page for that service, not the home page.
- Negative keywords: words you do not want to show up for, such as “free” or “jobs”, so you do not pay for the wrong clicks.
When to start with Google Ads
- The business is new and the site has no Google rankings yet.
- You have a seasonal service or an offer with an end date.
- You want to learn quickly which searches bring customers, before writing pages for them.
When to invest in SEO
- Customers search for you with specific words all year round.
- Clicks in your industry are expensive and you want to depend less on ads.
- You want something that lasts: pages and articles that bring people in for years.

Both start with the website
Neither SEO nor ads can save a slow site without a clear message. If the page does not explain within seconds what you do and how to get in touch, you are paying for visitors who leave. See how we handle SEO and Google Ads, and the basics of SEO in SEO for small businesses.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, SEO or Google Ads?
Neither on its own. Ads bring traffic immediately for as long as you pay; SEO brings traffic with no charge per click but takes time. Most businesses do best running both.
How much does a click on Google Ads cost?
There is no fixed price. The cost comes from an auction on every search and depends on the competition, the quality of the ad and the page, and the circumstances of the search.
Can Google spend more than my budget?
On a single day up to twice the average daily budget, but over the month no more than 30.4 times the average daily budget, according to Google.
If I already rank first on Google, do I need ads?
Not always. It is worth checking, though, whether competitors show ads above you for your name or your main services.
How quickly do ads bring customers?
They can show from the day they are approved. Getting them to perform properly takes tracking and adjustments over the first weeks.
