What a small business has to do to be found on Google and in AI answers: a technical foundation, one page per service, local SEO, Search Console and what not to pay for.
Why position matters: clicks gather at the top results.

1. The technical foundation
Before anything else, Google has to be able to find and read your pages. That means:
- Search Console: verify your site in Google Search Console, which is free. It shows which pages are indexed, which searches you appear for and whether there are errors.
- Sitemap: a file listing all your pages, submitted in Search Console.
- A title and description for every page: unique, with what people search for, not “Home” and “Services”.
- Speed on phones: most people will see you on a phone. See Core Web Vitals in plain words.
- HTTPS and one address: the site opens over https, and the www and non www addresses end up in the same place.
2. One page for every service
This is the most common gap in small businesses. If you do electrical installations, repairs and solar panels, and all three sit on one “Services” page, Google struggles to show you for any of them. One page per service, with exactly what you do, for whom, where, with photos of real jobs and common questions, makes the biggest difference.
Write the way your customers talk. They search for “website for a hair salon”, not “end to end digital solutions”.
3. Local SEO
For businesses that work in one city or area, the battle is on the map. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the same contact details everywhere are the foundation. We explain it step by step in How to get your business on Google Maps.
4. Content that answers questions
Articles are not there to fill a blog. A good article answers something your customers ask before they call you: how much it costs, how long it takes, what to watch out for. If you get asked the same thing every week, that is your next article.
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| “Our news” | “How much does it cost to replace the fuse box in a flat” |
| “About our company” | “What the annual boiler service includes” |
| General tips from other sites | What you have seen in your own jobs, with photos |
5. Google, AI and answers without a click
More and more searches are answered by an AI summary at the top of Google or by assistants such as ChatGPT. In its guidance on AI features in Search, Google says no special optimisation, special files or special schema are needed for a page to appear there: it only has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet (October 2026). In other words, the same basics apply.
For other AI assistants, an llms.txt file can help them understand what you do. We explain it in What is llms.txt.
What not to pay for
- A guaranteed first place. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Hundreds of backlinks for a small fee. They usually come from worthless sites and at worst they do harm.
- A page for every city with the same text. They help no visitor, and Google has no reason to show them.
- A monthly report with no changes to the site. SEO is work on the site and its content, not just measurement.

The basics, to tick off
0 of 10Frequently asked questions
How quickly does SEO show results?
Usually in months, not weeks. It depends on the competition, the state of the site and how much good content you add.
Do I need a blog to rank on Google?
Not necessarily. For most small businesses, service pages and the Google Business Profile matter more. Articles help when they answer real customer questions.
Can anyone guarantee me first place on Google?
No. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a number one ranking. A promise like that is a reason to look elsewhere.
What is Google Search Console?
A free Google tool that shows how Google sees your site: which pages it has indexed, which searches you appear for and whether there are errors.
Do I need anything special to appear in Google's AI answers?
According to Google, no. A page that is indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet can appear there too. The same basics apply.
